Alfa Romeo showed up at the Geneva Convention this year with the new version of their classic 159 series. The new model will be available in two forms: berlina and Sportwagon. Widely appreciated by critics and the European clientele, the new 159 numerous changes in the field of comfort and mechanics. The car still retains it’s characteristic Italian style, being in essence a true berlina. The Sportwagon version embodies the same features but with added flexibility and versatility in the use of the prestige station wagon space.
The most noticeable differences have been the changes to the cockpit. The Centro Stile Alfa Romeo has been involved in the interior design, from the dashes (Titanium coloured) to the upholstery, which in the Sport and TI versions is black. The satellite navigation has also received a more “user-friendly†interface. Exterior design has also been altered: the introduction of the rear logo, fitted with a push system, for immediate and safe opening of the boot and exclusive to the Sportwagon model, is the introduction of the “fix & fold†system, which allows total use of the baggage space by quickly and simply, folding down the rear seats. As an added bonus the guys from Alfa introduced three new tints (ice white, crystal blue and grey indigo) and three new alloy variations (16″ or 17″, in a sporty or elegant design).
Mechanical changes come as a pleasant surprise for Alfa – enthusiasts: two changes have taken place: firstly, in the field of safety, the new electronic Q2 system now comes as standard. Second is the introduction of the 3.2 V6 260 CV with front traction (up to now only available with the Q4) which allows a top speed of 250 km/h. The weight reduction has also been significant, approximately 50 kg have been disposed of in the new model. This improves acceleration, handling and fuel consumption by a significant amount. Each change save only a small amount, but ultimately it all starts to add up to some serious poundage. The direction of engineering in the field of automotive technology seem to be towards improving modern cars and boosting performance by saving weight.
