MASERATI GRANTURISMO S

Maserati Granturismo S

Although it has only been a year since the Italians from Maserati unveiled the enjoyable Granturismo, they’re introducing to the car lovers all around the world a new, more powerful version of it. The Granturismo S received a Ferrari-sourced 4.7-litre V8 engine pumping out around 350 kW coupled to a twin-clutch transmission for a 0.3 second reduction in the 0 - 100 km/h sprint time.

The extra half a litre gives the car more muscle to raise its power by 34bhp to 434bhp compared to the original Granturismo’s “meagre” 400bhp. Maserati hasn’t put forward to the press any performance figures before the car’s official unveiling next week at Geneva show, but it is expected to have supercar-like speed with a 0 - 100km/h sprint time of less than five seconds.

The more powerful engine is mated to an electro-actuated MC-Shift gearbox mounted on the rear transaxle for optimized weight distribution and faster shifting times, a layout typical of the high-performance sports cars. All this power is kept at bay by the Brembo breaking system which was first used on the Quattroporte Sport GT S and they feature race-developed front brakes with dual-cast iron/aluminum discs and six-pot aluminum callipers.

On the other hand, the visual part of the car hasn’t been subject to a lot of change, and what has been changed are details like the new wheels on the outside or the exclusive leather and Alcantara trim and the figure-hugging front and rear seats are distinguished by their dynamic new concept of horizontal piping on the seats and seatbacks. These cosmetic changes, though discreet, are very effective and make the body appear sportier without abandoning the sleekness lines masterfully designed by Pininfarina.

We can only look forward to the Geneva Motor Show for more juicy details about this exquisite piece of automotive jewelry.
