With the 1980 Esprit Turbo, Lotus entered the super car arena with a 148 mph (237 km/h) challenger that was a best seller for the Hethel based (Norforlk) manufacturer during the difficult 1980s. To banish the ‘lag’ often associated with turbocharger engines, Lotus engineers used a Garrett T3 turbocharger running at 8psi (lb/ in), bolted to a specially cast exhaust manifold. It was carefully set up to use the minimum gas flow for the required maximum output, an impressive 210 bhp at 6000 rpm from just 2174 cc. The twin cam engine was thoroughly reworked with different pistons to lower the compression ratio, and given dry sump lubrications. It was matched to a Citroen SM/ Maserati Merak five speed transaxle a very efficient combination. Now the Esprit had the power to exploit its superb chassis, but Lotus also took the precaution of strengthening the chassis around the engine bay and fitting up rated suspension, steering and brakes. The only added to the car’s excellent handling. Dating from the original Esprit of 1975, Ital Designer’s ‘chiselled’ styling still looked crisp and modern in 1981. Spoilers, NACA ducts in the bonnet and chunky side skirting differentiated it from the conventionally aspirated Esprit S3.
The HC Turbo Esprit of 1986 boasted more torque and power from its slightly higher compression engine 215 bhp and 220 lb/ft for improved mid and upper range punch. Its interior now had more useful adjustable backrests for the seats, and the exterior was mildly reworked with a new front spoiler and side decals. The restyled X180 Esprit replaced the HC in 1988, and continued in the Lotus price lists into the late 1980s as the Sport 300.
