The full size LX 470 offers all the luxuries of its smaller RX 300 siblings, but is definitely made of sturdier stuff. The LX 470 is built Toyota land Cruiser platform rather than a family sedan chassis, and it’s one comfort encrusted SUV you won’t have to worry about when going off road. The LX470 is built in the traditional SUV way, with both on frame construction. It seats up to eight people. It has a double wishbone independent front suspension with torsion bars. Minimum ground clearance is already 9.8 in. but the hydraulic adjustable height control can rise that for off road situations or lower it for easier exit. In high mode the system increases the approach and departure angles, and when the LX 470 is shifted into low range in rough terrain it will go into an extra high mode. The availability of a range is another of the difference between the LX 470 and RX 300. The big Lexus uses a full time 4 wheel drive system with a centre differential that splits the power 50/50 to the front and rear.
The system is always engaged, but the LX 470 gives the driver the option of shifting into the range. A traction control feature (TRAC) and a vehicle skid control (VSC) system further aid stability. Naturally, many will be drawn to the LX 470 more for its off road prowess. They will find plenty of comforts, for this Land Cruiser offspring is not only might when 4 wheeling, but carries a mighty price tag.
