Dixi was automobile brainchild of Eisenach automobile factory made up of 1904; but, within the tough climate of the Nineteen Twenties the corporate found it arduous to sell its 6/24 and 9/40 models. The manufacturer looked to enter the little automobile market, and in 1927 agreed to a licensing agreement with the Austin Motor Company to create a variant of the Austin seven. A production level of 2000 cars a year was prescribed, and Dixi paid Austin a royalty on every vehicle made.

 

The first one hundred cars were equipped as kits, however by December 1927 the primary of the official Dixi-manufactured vehicles, the DA-1 3/25PS were coming back off the assembly line. The DA designation stood for Deutsche Ausführung, which means German Version; 3/15 indicated the taxation and actual horsepower ratings. except being left-hand drive and using metric fasteners, the automobile was nearly a dead ringer for the Austin. Body designs offered were coupé, roadster, tourer, and sedan with a number of chassis planning to external coachbuilders. Most cars left the factory as tourers.

 

Looking to maneuver into automobile producing, BMW bought the Automobilwerk Eisenach in 1928 and, with it, the rights to create the Dixi automobile. initially the cars were badged as BMW Dixi however the Dixi name was dropped in 1929 when the DA-1 was replaced by a rather updated version, the BMW 3/15 DA-2.
