

The Toyota Sports 800 was the first sports car that was produced by the company that was produced from 1965 to 1969. It was available with a 700 to 800 cc engine that was capable of producing 28 to 45 hp. The car was able to travel at 45 mph in the city and 100 mph at the race track. It was first unveiled at the 1962 Tokyo Auto Show with a space age sliding canopy and it also had aerodynamic styling that was developed by Shozo Sato and Tatsuo Hasegawa. The Toyota Sports 800 had a length of 3,580 mm, width of 1,465 mm, height of 1,176 mm and a weight of 1,279 lb. It was the first model that had a lift-out roof panel or a targa top and the aluminum targa top can be removed and kept in the trunk. About 3,131 units were built during the first period of production and only ten percent of vehicles are still seen in Japan. Most of the vehicles produced were available with right hand drive and only few were developed as left hand drive models. The Toyota Sports 800 had a very less weight as it was built using aluminum and thin steel on the unibody construction. This model is also known as Yota-Hachi which means Toyota 8 in Japanese short form. The company also produced another prototype model known as Sports 800 Gas Turbine Hybrid that was introduced at the 1979 Tokyo Motor Show.
