The Subaru B9SC was first introduced at the North American International Auto Show in the year 2004 as a concept car. It also features a Sequential Series Hybrid Electric Vehicle propulsion system along with a 2.0 liter DOHC Subaru boxer 4-cylinder gas engine. The SSHEV system combines the output from electric motor and gas engine via special two-way clutch for additional performance on hills as well as for quicker acceleration. A two-way clutch has been perfectly integrated into the transmission case. The vehicle also has height-adjustable suspension and large wheels along with run-flat tires. It has been colored with a special protective paint that wraps the upper body behind the doors to offer unity to the design. The Subaru B9SC is the first advanced-technology concept model in the United States which features signature elements of the evolving design language of the company that is being developed under the direction of Andreas Zapatinas, the Subaru Chief Designer. The vehicle has a trail-driving capability which makes it a sports car for all roads and it also features a windshield that is made of a special mirror reflective glass. The Subaru B9SC front grill and air intakes have been specially developed to display the wing of an airplane. When the car reaches 50 mph, it only runs on the gasoline engine and the internal combustion engine runs in its efficient speed range. The same technology has been used by the company to develop Subaru R1e.
