MERCEDES F700 – IS A TIME MACHINE

Forget the sweeping curves, challenging proportions and gromless, face; what matters about the Mercedes Benz F700 is the tech. it previews tomorrows S class. First up, pre scan suspension, which uses pulsed laser to read the road upto 7m in front of the car, detecting the bumps and feeding the information to the F700’s hydraulic active body control suspension. As a bump approaches, ABC raises the body slightly, and then releases hydraulic pressure to allow free wheel movement. Ridges in the road surface are erased, for a calmer, quieter ride. Works well over speed bumps. The F700 is powered by Mercedes’ DiesOtto engine, a 1.8 liter in line four that combines element of diesel and petrol (Ottocycle) engines in the search for the cleaner, more efficient combustion. It runs on petrol, but the ignition is achieved without a spark by a controlled rise in cylinder temperature. That calls for variable value timing, a variable compression ratio, two stage turbo charging, expensive pressure sensors and sophisticated engine management to make it work and even then, DiesOtto has to switch back to spark ignition for cold starts and full throttle acceleration. Managing the transaction between the two modes is the tricky bit, but you hardly notice it when it happens.

There’s 238bhp on tap, while an electric motor adds another 20hp and boots total torque to 295lbft. Performance is brisk and fuel efficiency remarkable: fitted with a start/stop function and regenerative braking, F700 can return 53mpg. But by excellent class standard the engine is unrefined, and the technology it requires is prohibitively expensive. Some of it will pop up in Mercedes over the next few years-but don’t hold you breath.

MERCEDES-BENZ SL63 AMG

Oh I hate this, here are five cars, the ownership of any of which would be enough to get your pencil drumming impatiently on the table during meetings until you could go back outside and drive again. Each is powerful, sexy, luxurious and immensely desirable, but I have to construct an argument for sending four of them home. So before I do let me just acknowledge that the presence of any of these five on your drive would immeasurably improve you life unless- and this is unlikely – you already have something better. We have grouped them together loosely as big coupes; these are 2+2s, one is two seat tin top and this Mercedes Benz SL63 is a two seat folding hardtop. It is twice the price of Nissan GT-R, but the other three are more tightly packed on price, and when you drive all five together they feel like natural rivals, each telling you something about the others. Its hard to foresee any circumstances under which you’d drive your SL63 on a track, but the way the big merc performed at Anglesey was illuminating, if not strictly relevant. You expect this two tonne boulevardier to disintegrate, but the very opposite happens. With its active body control and AMG suspension package it turns in cleanly, corners flat and blots off in pursuit of M3s and Evos.

Its quickly apparent that AMG has managed to endow the SL, jackhammer 518bph atom V8, and the seven speed wet clutch automatic box lets you modulate the power as precisely as you’d hope for on a streaming wet track with fine views of the sea. In the dry, the tyres are fuse. The trick suspension keeps everything level and composed but down below they are working hard, and it’s a surprise when they finally start to let go. More natural, progressive roll would keep you better informed. You see what I mean? On what grounds do I eliminate the SL63? All I can say is that this car is merely surprisingly good, whereas one of its rivals is shockingly JAGUAR XKR-S.

MERCEDES CLK BLACK

In my opinion, Mercedes is going through a personality crisis. Look at the CLK Black. For starters, it’s not even black, it’s silver. And considering the Mercedes brand still means ‘exquisitely-engineer-saloon-that-last a million miles’ to most people, this CLK is absurd, incongruous. I know its related to the F1 Safety Car, but away from the track this Mercedes feels like its related to TVR. The misfit character starts as soon as you get in-you will find hardcore bucket seat, an empty expanse of black carpet in the back, and the fattest, flat-bottomed steering wheel you will find in nay road car- my hands look like a three year olds when I grip it. All of this, in an otherwise ordinary-looking Mercedes interior. That’s not to say that Mercedes went off half-cocked with this project- no, if there’s one thing you can say about the Black, its absolutely fully cocked. Under the flared bodywork there is a wider track, adjustable suspension, a heavyweight rear axle with a limited slip diff, massive AMG brakes. Oh, and did I mention the engine? It’s a trifling 6.2 liters of AMG –turned 500bhp V8. And the noise! When I start it up, everyone stops what they are doing. I mean everyone in Anglesey- teacups vibrate their way across kitchen tables. It is stupidly loud, popping and grumbling like awaiting NASCAR. God, I love it.

Time to put the seven-speed semi-auto into ‘manual’, use the aluminium  paddle to click first gear, and rumble out along a twisting North Wales back-road. Immediately, the ride is jumpy, and the steering feels incredibly stiff around the straight-ahead, like a racing car maneuvering on slicks. Unfortunately it feels synthetic, like a factory-fabricated stiffness, rather than road directness like the Porsche’s.

MERCEDES-BENZ E CLASS

Mercedes-Benz E class is the luxury saloon vehicle. Being the normal vehicle of the Mercedes-Benz it is the most demanding vehicle all over the world. This vehicle is more spacious than to the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and have a beautiful body. LUXURY MACHINE ‘’MERCEDES BENZ CLS’’

The business tycoons are always in search for new rides. Or what we can say corporate ride. The luxury section of the automotive section has gone quite unaffordable for the non- millionaires. This usually is because the class offered in the luxury section is quite a hell of a furnished job. One of the companies strong enough to support the luxury section is the Mercedes Benz. And its sub category the CLS Class is quite the right vehicle for all the corporate class.
