During the 1980s Porsche realized that relying on the demand for hard-core sports cars were always going to be risky. In 1988 the board decided that it would apply Porsche’s engineering know how to building an upmarket five door family car. Looking like a stretched 996 series 911, the 989 progressed towards production. But the costs of creating a completely new model, along with significant engineering problems, were too much for an ailing Porsche to shoulder. The 989 project was scrapped in 1991. Porsche spent the next few years concentrating on the 996 and Boxster, but in the late 1990s it became clear that the upmarket SUV were set to become a major new global market. Porsche could not clear this new market alone, its first attempt was to form a partnership with Mercedes and build its own SUV based on the M Class. This soon founded, but Porsche and its sister company Volkswagen decided to join forces and build a SUV. Many in the auto industry thought Porsche had lost its collective marbles. However, the arrival of the Cayenne in 2002 confounded everybody.

Yes, the car was huge. But it also had huge performance from its new generation. V8 engines, especially the extraordinary turbocharged V8. The unit offered 450 bhp and 521 bhp in Turbo S from but Porsche engineers had the ability to make this substantial machine handle like a sports car. The Cayenne also become Porsche’s best selling vehicle and major profit generator, party thanks to a very competitively priced V6 entry level model.

By the turn of the 1990s, Porsche future model planning was in chaos, as were their finances. Porsche had been conceived that modern, front engined models such as the 944and 928 would win out, as the ageing (and in some ways archaic) 911 would wither and die. Unfortunately, the reverse happened. Demand for the 928 and 944 faded badly as the 1980s boom faded, with the 928 being built in tiny batches at huge expenses. No surprise, then, that Porsche had to seek Toyota’s help with radically reducing engineering coasts and making its cars easier and quicker to build. Rebuilding its product strategy, Porsche decided to keep things simple and base its revival on building two cars based on the same basic components. One would be a modern re-invention of the 911 and other would be a less expensive roadster, which should have been more recession, proof giant GTs such as 928. The Boxster concept was unveiled at the Detroit motor show in the first few days of 1993. A compact two seater roadster, it was clearly inspired by the classic 1950s Porsche 550 Spyder.

It’s no exaggeration to say that the Boxster concept was a massive hit and US dealers started taking orders in autumn 1993. However, the Boxster didn’t arrive in the show rooms for four years and the reception was muted, as the production model looked slightly tame compared with it glamorous forerunner. Once behind the wheel, attitudes changed very quickly as it become clear the Boxster was an absolutely first rate performance machine. Admirably, Porsche resisted the temptation to over engine the car and it became the company’s best seller for the first four years of its life.

Porsche’s new found determination to re-invent the 911, after coming close to giving it the axe in 1981 managed to scale new heights of automobiles technology. The 959 was so far ahead of the opposition when it was first driven in 1987 that it re-defined the term. Although based on central section of a standard 911, the 959 bore little resemblance to it. the familiar 911 lines had been swollen, with new nose and a radically different tail. Under the new lines was a 4×4 drivetrain and a high tech twin turbo version of the flat six engine. Even the damping and the ride height were electronically adjustable. One German publication managed to clock the 959 at a maximum speed of 197mph, but then the 959 small for a ‘supercar’ and had 450bhp to push it through the air. The 959 smashed other performance benchmarks too, achieving the 0-100mph dash in just 8.3 seconds. What really surprised the first drivers of the 959 was the ease with which this performance could be accessed. Up until the 959 arrived, seriously fast cars were generally large, heavy and extremely difficult to drive flat out.

The traditional super car was more closely related to out and out race cars. Porsche moved the goalposts in a very significant way with the 959. It developed complex but reliable technology to allow the averagely skilled driver to pilot a car a tremendous speed. Experts brought up on the pleasure gained from driving a challenging car quickly were astonished by the outright performance of the 959, but less impressed by what some critics and drivers thought a characterless road rocket.

The Porsche Panamera is a tourism of almost five meters long, the same number of doors and four seats. It is the first time that Porsche have a vehicle with a body of this kind. Marketing began on September 12, 2009. Since February 2010 there are two versions: Panamera Panamera and 4, both with 300 hp engine. A Panamera S (€ 105,525) is more expensive than a Mercedes-Benz CLS 500 to 388 hp (84,000 €), a Lexus LS 460, a BMW 750i or Mercedes-Benz S 500. Un Maserati Quattroporte (400 CV) es más caro (126.116 €). A Maserati Quattroporte (400 hp) is more expensive (€ 126,116). The Panamera measured 4.97 m long, 1.93 m wide and 1.42 m high. And is longer than any other Porsche. Some models with similar characteristics (sedans with coupe silhouette) are the Mercedes-Benz CLS, Maserati Quattroporte and the Fisker Karma. The Porsche and Fisker are distinguished because their body is of greater width. For height, the Panamera is somewhere between the CLS (1.39 cm) and Maserati (1.43 cm). There are two types of transmissions, a manual and a dual-clutch automatic (“PDK”, which also have the 911, Cayman and the Boxster ). La The version “S” can be bought with both changes, while the rest (“4S” and “Turbo”) are only available with the “PDK. The version “S” with dual-clutch automatic “PDK” has a top speed of 283 km / h, accelerates from 0-100 km / h in 5.4 s and consumes 10.8 litres/100 km on the combined cycle.. Expenditure is lower than the CLS, the S6 and the Quattroporte.

Porsche unveiled the Cayenne S Hybrid at the Geneva Motor Show 2010. The biggest news for the 2011 model year is the availability of the Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid that features a parallel full hybrid drive system allowing it to return a combined fuel-economy of 8.2 liters/100km (equal to 34.4MPG), which means CO2 emissions of 193 g/km. Cayenne S Hybrid is powered by a 333-hp 3 liter supercharged V6 gasoline engine mated to a 47-hp electric-motor, allowing it to produce a total output of 380-hp and a maximum torque of 427 b-ft. Porsche says that that allows the same performance level of a V8 engine. Both drive units are connected together by the Hybrid Manager, which is essential to run the Cayenne S Hybrid on its electric-motor or combustion engine alone, or with both drive units working together. It also features something called a “sailing mode.” While to ensure fast take-off from the line, the electric-motor may require the assistance of the V6 gasoline engine, Porsche says that at times, the combustion engine may completely switch off at speeds of up to 97 mph – meaning it can be fully disengaged from the drive train when no further power is required. Overall the new Cayenne S Hybrid can give you a luxury drive with more efficient, less emitting, fuel economic hybrid technology.

Porsche unveiled its 918 Spyder, the mid-engine sports cars with plug-in hybrid technology at 2010 Geneva Motor Show. Highly innovative Porsche 918 Spyder design combines performance with intelligent philosophy of high-tech sports car with a modern design classic. The Porsche 918 Spyder concept is a plug-in hybrid equipped with a 500HP 3.4L V8 engine combined with two electric motors producing an additional 218HP. The open top two-seater has a top speed of 198mph and can reach 0-60mph in 3.2 seconds. Porsche claims it can deliver 78 miles to the gallon and run 16 hours off battery. Power is transmitted to the wheels with the Porsche seven-speed Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) transmission that powers the electrical propulsion of the rear axle and Front-wheel drive electric power via a fixed transmission ratio.

Porsche 918 Spyder concept also has other innovative features such as line manager. Once activated in the Center Display, Range Manager using the navigation system map to provide a range that can cover the remaining cars, of course, allows the driver to influence the range through proper selection and assets performance. Offering a unique combination of very low fuel consumption, high performance and long electric stove, a Porsche 918 Spyder concept represents an important milestone in the strategy of Porsche on the road to electric mobility Aboriginal. The advanced design of the structure of the body speaks some thing more than beauty.

The weight of the 2011 Porsche has been reduced by 176 pounds compared to previous cars in Boxster series. In order to save weight of 2011 Porsche Boxster Spyder, some of the non-essential features like air-conditioning and radio have been removed from the standard edition. Of course they can be added as optional features. The reduction in weight gives a sharper driving experience. Porsche cars are rear engined. The engine is 3.4 liter, flat six- cylinder. That means the cylinders are placed inline flat fashion. This flat arrangement of cylinders helps to lower the center of gravity of Porsche. It produces a peak power of 320-hp, around 10 hps more from previous Boxsters, and a torque of 270 pound-feet. The engine is fitted to either six-speed manual transmission or optional seven speed PDK dual clutch automated manual transmission. The 2011 Porsche Boxster Spyder can rip to a speed of 60mph in 4.6 seconds and has a top speed of 166 mph. This car was released in February 2010 in US market with a price tag of $62,150. As per fuel efficiency is considered, the EPA ratings for 2011 Porsche Boxster Spyder is a 19 mpg in city and a 27 mpg on highways.

Unloved, and now almost forgotten, the Porsche 914 was a hybrid, conceived to give Porsche a foot hold in the mass market sports car sector, which later achieved with the Boxster. For collaborators Volkswagen worried by poor sales of its mainstay Beetle, it meant some much needed showroom glamour to draw in the customers. Launched in 1969, the Karmann built targa top which always seemed to look as if it was going both ways at once, was powered by an injected VW411, air cooled, mid mounted flat four. This produced a modest 85 bhp for a disappointing top speed of little more 107 mph (171 km/h). Later versions had a much superior and much needed 2 liter unit specially developed by Porsche, although the top of the range 914/6 with the 2 liter 911 flat six proved short lived due to its ridiculously high production cost. The 914 had considerable appeal as a superior entry level sports car, particularly in the USA. There was road holding aplenty, decent luggage space in its noise and tail, importantly; it was built as well as any 911.

Historians tend to view the Porsche VW914 as a commercial flop, but in reality this wasn’t the case, 119,000 examples of all types were built before Porsche pulled the plug in 1975. On the terms of sales figures, the car was a success. Of these, 84,000 went to North America, the main intended market for the 914. However, there is a lot more to a good car then sales, as the 914 very aptly demonstrates.
